Brainology Discussion

You have all been carefully reading through “Brainology” this week. Now, it is time to share your insights with your classmates. For this discussion, please answer the following questions:

  • Explain what Dweck means by “fixed” mindset (1). What are the characteristics of a fixed mindset?
  • Explain Dweck’s concept of a “growth” mindset (1). What are the traits of a growth mindset?
  • How did the author test her theory of mindsets and how intelligence is developed? In your opinion, did the author prove her theory? How?
  • The author explains that “negatively stereotyped students” (Dweck 4) benefit from the research findings. Provide some examples of negative stereotyping and how these types of generalizations harm students. How are these students helped or harmed by their mindsets?
  • Do you think you have a “fixed” or “growth mindset” (Dweck 1)? Has your perspective on learning changed since reading the article?
  • Define the following vocabulary words in context, taking time to identify the part of speech:
    • Deficiency
    • Plummet
    • Perseverance
    • Implication
    • Chronically

  1. Initial posts are due by Friday at 11:59 PM Pacific Time. Your responses should be in full sentences and at least 300-400 words in length.
  2. You need to respond to at least 3 of your classmates. Your responses should be more than “I agree/I like what your are saying.” Your responses should be at least 100-150 words in length. Response postings should be completed no later than Sunday at 11:59 PM Pacific Time
  3. The key to a good discussion is interaction. Therefore, it is expected that you will log in and participate in the discussions on three (3) separate days per unit.
  4. Please note that posting all, or the majority, of your replies on the last day of the discussion after 6:00 pm will be considered for point deduction since this greatly decreases the interaction and impact of your posts.
  5. Interaction is the key to a productive and meaningful discussion between you, your peers, and your instructor, so your goal and approach should be meaningful interaction rather than meeting minimum point requirements
